    ABOUT US

Urbanization in Bangladesh is growing fast and sporadic compared to its rural part. Considering the disaster vulnerabilities of Bangladesh, the country is susceptible to urban hazards which is increasingly higher in line with its ongoing mega infrastructure development. However, existing active tectonic plates around the country is suspected to lead to a potential earthquake causing mega disaster. Being vulnerable to complex disasters, Bangladesh has long experience of disaster management predominantly in rural landscape. Government of Bangladesh has taken initiative to develop 62,000 Urban Volunteers (UCV) across the country as part of its disaster preparedness in urban spectrum.

Through the collaboration with development partners, Government has been working to develop urban volunteers in different cities and towns and trained around 36,000 UCVs to help search & rescue operations, first aid and to create mass awareness in the urban community. Bangladesh Fire Service & Civil Defense (FSCD) is the key agency to provide technical assistance to develop UCVs for search & rescue, first aid and other community services during urban disaster like fire, earthquake, building collapse etc. UCVs are the first responders in aid of the affected community even before the arrival of response agencies like FSCD. UCVs also help to create awareness and preparedness for building resilient cities. UCV is an asset for the country and need to build upon intrinsic humanitarian value of our citizens and volunteers’ ideology.

Institutionalization of volunteers is an important part of the urban resilience approach. It is a participatory approach to engage people in disaster management governance in an effective and sustainable way. Opportunities for volunteering is open to all given their role in different arenas which can empower people. Be a registered volunteer, be part of humanitarian work.
